“The pigeon is always right!”
This was but one of the stirring adages delivered at a training workshop, “Understand the mind, understand the learner”, held at SBCS’ Trincity campus, January 9 & 10, 2014. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Arthur Kohn (PhD Cognitive Science), President of AKLearning; a US-based company that produces custom e-training that is used by hundreds universities and corporate colleges. It was designed to help our lecturers understand how the brain controls learning and memory, and teach in ways that will effectively engage the brain and maximize learning and recall.
In his formal opening address, Executive Director of SBCS, Dr Robin Maraj stressed the importance of this training to SBCS administrative and academic staff in attendance, in improving the quality and efficacy of our content delivery to students.
Over the course of the workshop, Professor Kohn took the attendees on a journey through core principles aimed at understanding how a learner’s mind works. Through interactive discussion and live demonstrations, he imparted key ideas in areas such as:
• improving teaching by understanding how the brain encodes metaphor and emotion;
• improving learners’ attention by understanding the secrets to people’s levels of consciousness;
• designing effective “follow-up training” by tapping into mnemonic principles of memory;
This training is part of SBCS’ on going drive to keep our staff relevant to the changing and varying types of learners that exist in today’s Education environment. It is through this commitment that we continue to make SBCS a great place to learn.
